How to Create Realistic Snow Effects with WetWork Snow Plugin for RealFlow 2012




If you are looking for a way to create realistic snow effects in your 3D scenes, you might want to check out the WetWork Snow Plugin for RealFlow 2012. In this article, we will show you how to use the WetWork Snow Plugin for RealFlow 2012 to create a simple snow scene. You will need the following software:


  • RealFlow 2012 or higher



  • WetWork Snow Plugin for RealFlow 2012 (you can download a free trial version from here)



  • A 3D modeling software of your choice (we will use Maya in this example)



  • A renderer of your choice (we will use V-Ray in this example)



Let's get started!


Step 1: Create a Ground Plane and a Sphere




Open your 3D modeling software and create a ground plane and a sphere. The ground plane will be the surface where the snow will accumulate, and the sphere will be the object that will interact with the snow. You can use any shape or model you want, but make sure they have enough polygons for the snow particles to stick to. For this example, we will use a simple plane with 100 x 100 subdivisions, and a sphere with 50 x 50 subdivisions.


Position the sphere above the ground plane, and export both objects as OBJ files. Make sure to name them accordingly (e.g., ground.obj and sphere.obj) and save them in a folder where you can easily access them later.


Step 2: Import the Objects into RealFlow




Open RealFlow and create a new project. Go to File > Import > Import Object and select the ground.obj file. A new object node will appear in the Node Editor. Rename it as "Ground" and set its Type to "Static". This means that the object will not move or deform during the simulation.


Repeat the same process for the sphere.obj file. Rename it as "Sphere" and set its Type to "Rigid". This means that the object will move and collide with other objects during the simulation.


You can adjust the position and scale of the objects in the Viewport by using the Move and Scale tools. You can also change their display color by clicking on their node icons and choosing a color from the Color Picker.


Step 3: Add a WetWork Snow Domain




To use the WetWork Snow Plugin for RealFlow 2012, you need to add a WetWork Snow Domain node to your scene. This node defines the volume where the snow particles will be generated and simulated. Go to Plugins > WetWork > WetWork Snow Domain and click on it. A new node will appear in the Node Editor. Rename it as "Snow" and connect it to both "Ground" and "Sphere" nodes by dragging their output ports to its input port.


The WetWork Snow Domain node has several parameters that you can tweak to customize your snow effect. Here are some of the most important ones:


  • Snow Density: This controls how many snow particles are generated per cubic meter of volume. A higher value means more snow particles, but also more computation time.



  • Snow Size: This controls how big each snow particle is. A higher value means bigger snow particles, but also less detail.



  • Snow Color: This controls what color the snow particles are. You can use any RGB value or choose from a preset list of colors.



  • Snow Friction: This controls how much friction each snow particle has when it collides with other objects or particles. A higher value means more resistance, but also more realism.
