Vaali was born as T. S. Rangarajan on 29 October 1931 in Srirangam, Tamil Nadu. He had a passion for writing since his childhood and started composing poems at the age of nine. He moved to Chennai in 1951 and joined the film industry as an assistant to the director Krishnan-Panju. He also acted in a few films, such as Sorgam (1970) and Hey Ram (2000).


Vaali's first song as a lyricist was "Nilave Ennidam Nerungathe" for the film Ratha Thilagam (1963), composed by K. V. Mahadevan. He soon became one of the most sought-after lyricists in Tamil cinema, working with legendary composers such as M. S. Viswanathan, Ilaiyaraaja, A. R. Rahman and Harris Jayaraj. He also wrote songs for Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada films.


Vaali was known for his mastery of the Tamil language and his ability to write songs for any situation, mood or genre. He was also praised for his use of metaphors, imagery, alliteration, rhyme and rhythm in his lyrics. He won several awards and honors for his contribution to Tamil music and literature, such as the Padma Shri (2007), the Kalaimamani (1979) and the National Film Award for Best Lyrics (2000).


Vaali passed away on 18 July 2013 at the age of 81, due to respiratory problems. He was survived by his wife Sugantha and son Balaji. His funeral was attended by thousands of fans and celebrities from the film and music industry.
