Meanwhile, a rogue Jaeger called Obsidian Fury attacks a PPDC base in Sydney, Australia, where Mako is delivering a speech. Jake and his former co-pilot Nate Lambert pilot their own Jaeger, Gipsy Avenger, to fight Obsidian Fury, but Mako is killed by a missile fired by the rogue Jaeger.
Jake and Nate discover that Obsidian Fury is controlled by a Kaiju brain and was created by Shao Industries, a Chinese corporation that is developing drone Jaegers for mass production. They also learn that Dr. Newton Geiszler, a former PPDC scientist who helped close the portal in the first film, is now working for Shao Industries and has been corrupted by his mind link with the Kaiju.
